It's all about the Shedders

Members of a Men's Shed are known as Shedders.

Some come for the tools and the sawdust. Some come for the kettle and the company. Most come for a bit of both.

Olney Men's Shed is for men of any age and any circumstance - in work, out of work, unable to work, retired, feeling isolated, or recently out of the Armed Forces. If you would like somewhere to make things, learn something, or simply not spend the day on your own, you are who we are here for.

We are not open yet. We are converting a building at the Recreation Ground on East Street in Olney, and we aim to open in the first half of 2027. You do not have to wait for us though - join now as a Founder Shedder and help shape The Shed before the doors open.

From opening day, there are two ways to be a Shedder. Bench Shedders are hands-on tools. Brew Shedders are here for the company. They cost different amounts because one of them needs a workshop and the other needs a kettle, and you can switch between them whenever you like.

Whichever way you join, you are a full Shedder: the same welcome, the same standing, and the same say in our shed.

Founder Shedders

£40, paid in full, covering your first 12 months

This is how you join us before we open.

Founder Shedders are the people who get the Shed built: you will be in our WhatsApp group, welcome at our monthly meetings, and part of the decisions about tools, layout and what we do first.

Your £40 covers 12 months from the day you pay. When we open and your Founder year comes to an end, you choose whether to carry on as a Bench Shedder or a Brew Shedder.

If we are not open by the time your 12 months are up, you can renew as a Founder Shedder at the same £40. We are not going to charge you more for a workshop you cannot use yet.

Bench Shedders

£60 a year (or £6 a month), from the day we open

Bench Shedders are hands-on tools.

You will be inducted on our machinery, you can work on your own projects, and you can join in with the community builds - benches, bird boxes, planters, repairs, and whatever Olney brings through the door.

You do not need any experience. Plenty of Shedders arrive having never used a lathe or a router in their lives, and there is always somebody happy to show you. If you have spent forty years in a trade, you will find people keen to learn from you.

Bench Shedders are welcome to use the kettle, the chairs and the conversation too. The bench does not stop you being sociable.

Brew Shedders

£30 a year (or £3 a month), from the day we open

Brew Shedders are here for the social side.

No tools, no induction, no obligation to make anything. Just the Shed, the conversation, and good company.

It suits people who would rather talk than saw, people who are not steady enough on their feet for machinery, and people who want to see what goes on before deciding whether to pick up a tool. If you change your mind later, you can move to Bench Shedder whenever you like.

Turning up and having a cup of tea with people is the whole point of The Shed. It is not a lesser way to be a member.
